The Condition of Rural Housing

The 1991 Scottish House Condition Survey showed:

  • 6.6% of the occupied rural stock fell below the tolerable standard, compared with 4.3% in urban areas

  • 18% of rural dwellings had rising or penetrating damp compared to 12% in urban areas

  • Average repair costs were almost double the figure for urban areas

  • 42% of rural properties needed repairs costing £1,000 or more compared to 29% of urban dwellings

  • 36% of rural dwellings were built before 1919 compared to 18% of urban dwellings.
