Rural Scotland People, Prosperity and Partnership
THE FUTURE FOR SCOTTISH RURAL COMMUNITIESIt would be easy to concentrate on the jobs and economy of rural Scotland. But our rural communities have a rich and varied life which too has to be celebrated. The mood in much of the world is to recapture the diversity of our many different communities, not to turn the clock back but as a way of invigorating rural life. Improving housing, enabling people to live in the communities they have know all their lives, educating our children for living in the broad Scottish tradition; these are all important matters to be pushed forward alongside the search for prosperity. We need to work towards the development of regional identities; where each society, each group, each person, is able to express their character. Man will always wish to explore change, to grasp opportunities, to seek a higher quality of life. The impetus for change can very often arise from aspirations identified more with urban issues and communities. This document outlines a general policy framework which enables rural communities to move forward. We are determined that the people of these communities should be enabled to take control of their lives, with the assistance of networks of experienced organisations, to to meet challenges and seize the opportunities.
