Enjoying the Past

Remains of the past provide a source of enjoyment for us all, whether through informal recreation or through tourism initiatives. Historic Scotland cares for over 330 monuments which are open to visitors; and additional sites are in the care of such bodies as the National Trust for Scotland, the Forestry Commission and local authorities, while still others are in private ownership. We promote initiatives to manage and display buildings and monuments, such as Doors Open Day and support similar initiatives by others such as the Adopt-A-Monument Scheme run by the Council for Scottish Archaeology.
