THE WIDER ENVIRONMENT

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency

One of the main achievements of the Environment Act 1995, was to provide for the creation of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. This will, from 1 April 1996, provide a single, integrated pollution control body with responsibility for land, air and water. Within that remit, the Agency will tackle a wide range of problems, from rural river pollution to factory emissions in the Central Belt. It is required, under its founding statute, to have regard to the desirability of conserving and enhancing the natural heritage of Scotland, and will consult Scottish Natural Heritage about any of its activities which may adversely areas of special natural heritage or scientific interest. The new Agency will also be under a specific duty to have regard to the social and economic needs of any area of Scotland, and in particular to such needs of rural areas.
