Simplifying Designations

We recognise that the array of different natural heritage and related designations, which has been added to by recent European Directives, has now grown to the point where there is a real risk of confusion. In addition, a number of organisations, both local authority and non-governmental have used the concept of designation to draw attention to many environmental issues, especially those of local interest. Scottish Natural Heritage has done valuable ground work in its Task Force on Designations but we intend to carry through a review of designations in use in Scotland in order to clarify their purposes, define their impacts and, where possible, identify steps with de-regulation in mind, which will reduce the apparent burden implied by the range now in use.
