Crofter Housing

Croft houses form a significant part of the housing stock in the Highlands and Islands and, in the past, crofters have experienced poor housing conditions. The Crofters Building Grants and Loans Scheme provides grant assistance and low cost loans for the construction of new and the improvement of existing croft houses. In 1994-95, the Government spent almost £5 million on this support and, in total some 7,000 new houses have been built and more than 10,000 improvements made since the scheme began in 1912, with obvious benefits to the crofting community.
